Lincoln was initially founded in 1856 as the village of Lancaster. It later became during the year 1859 the county seat of the newly created Lancaster County. The city of Omaha has been the capital city of the Nebraska Territory ever since the year 1854, when the territory was originally formed. Most of the population was located on the south side of the Platte River. The legislature voted to move the capital south of the river and as far west as possible after a main part of the territory south of the Platte considered annexation to Kansas. They chose the region of Lancaster due mostly to the marshes and the salt flats which naturally took place within the region.

The state government and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln are additional big contributors to the local economy.

Scattered all over the city, there are many beautiful outdoor city parks, as a matter of fact there are more than 100 parks. The most famous of these parks are Folsom Children's Zoo, Holmes Park, Wilderness Park, Pioneers Park Nature Center, Sunken garden, Antelope Park, Tierra Park, and Oak Lake Park. The city has one of the best trail systems within the nation with over 99 miles of trails. These interconnected trails offer the perfect opportunity for biking, rollerblading, walking, and hiking. Another famous pastime within the region is fishing. Amongst the main species consist of Crappie, Largemouth Bass, Carp, Bullhead, Channel Catfish and Bluegill.

Another common feature within the city of Lincoln is live music. the city of Lincoln hosts lots of festivals for its residents and visitors. Amongst the great venues is the Pershing Auditorium where large tours and national acts perform on a regular basis. Duffy's Tavern and Knickerbockers are other well known venues which features local and regional acts. The Zoo Bar showcases nightly blues music. The Lied Center is home of many Broadway productions, guest lectures and concerts. Community theatre can be enjoyed at the Lincoln Community Theatre, and the UNL student's stage productions.
