Forklift Seat Belt - Described in the Regulation guidelines are the use of seatbelts and operator restraints on forklifts. It states that the liability falls on the employers' to ensure that each machinery, piece of equipment and device is utilized rightly used in accordance to the directions of the manufacturer.
Rough Terrain lift trucks have to meet the regulations of ANSI Standard ASME B56.6-1992 with regards to their use, design, maintenance, inspection and fabrication.
Side boom tractors and mobile machine together with a Rollover Protective Structure, or ROPS for short, must have seat belts which satisfy the requirements of the Society of Automotive Engineers, or SAE, Standard J386 JUN93, Operator Restraint System for Off-Road Work Machines. If any mobile machine has seat belts required by law, the driver and subsequent passengers have to make certain they use the belts every time the vehicle is in motion or engaged in operation because this could cause the machine to become unstable and therefore, not safe.
When a seat belt or other operator restraint is needed on a lift truck.
The seat belt requirements while working a lift truck depend on different factors. Whether the lift truck is outfitted together with a Rollover Protective Structure, the kind of forklift itself and the year the forklift was manufactured all contribute to this determination. The manufacturer's directions and the requirements of the applicable standard are referenced in the Regulation.
With regards to to an operator restraint device, enclosure or system, ANSI Standard ASME B56.1-1993 in the case of powered industrial trucks, is designed to assist the driver in reducing the probability of entrapment of the head and/or torso between the truck and the ground in the event of a tip over. The restraint device or system may consist of a seat belt, while a seat belt is not essentially a part of such machine or system.
